The Beginning of Christ's Public Ministry

  1. THE BEGINNING OF CHRIST’S PUBLIC MINISTRY
    1. Baptism and Temptations (see previous outline on “Early Life of Jesus”)
    2. John the Baptist declares he is not Messiah-to committee from Sanhedrin (John 1:19-28)
    3. John the Baptist identifies Jesus as “the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 19-34)
    4. Jesus calls His first disciples –Andrew, possibly John, Simon, Philip, and Nathanael (John 1:35-51)
    5. Jesus’ first sign-miracle in, water changed to wine at Cana of Galilee (John 2:1-11)
    a. John’s use of term, “sign”, as a miracle that points to the identity of Jesus and shows forth His glory
    b. The setting of this sign; the six stone water-pots and the rite of purification among the Jews
    c. The strange (to us!) conversation between Jesus and His mother
    d. The question of “wine” (or alcoholic beverages)
    e. The significance of this sign: superiority of Jesus to the Law (see 1:17); the power of Jesus over His creation (1:3); relates His gospel to a wedding celebration
