THE GALILEAN MINISTRY (probably late A.D. 27 –early 29) 1. Jesus begins His preaching and teaching ministry (Mk. 1:14-15; Matt. 4:17; Lk. 4:14-15) 2. Healing of son of nobleman at Cana (John 4:46-54) 3. Rejected at Nazareth and moved to Capernaum (Lk. 4:16-31; Matt. 4:13-16) a. Setting in the Synagogue—reading from Isaiah 58:6; 61:1-2) b. Immediate approval by audience—later severe disapproval 4. Calls four fishermen by Sea of Galilee (Mk. 1:16-20; Matt. 4:18-22; Lk. 5:1-11) 5. Healing of demoniac in synagogue in Capernaum on Sabbath (Mk. 1:21-28; Lk. 4:31-37) 6. Healing of Peter’s mother-in-law and others (Mk. 1:29-34; Matt. 8:14-17; Lk. 4:38-41) 7. Toured Galilee, preaching the gospel of the Kingdom and healing. Great multitudes from surrounding areas gather to hear Him (Mk. 1:35-39; Lk. 4:42-44; Matt. 4:23-25) 8. Healing of a leper (Mk. 1:40-45; Matt. 8:2-4; Lk. 5:12-16) 9. Heals paralyzed man lowered through roof in Capernaum (Mk. 2:1-12; Matt. 9:1-8; Lk. 5:17-26) a. Brought by four men (“seeing their faith”)—the risk of a roof repair!! b. Jesus’ authority and power to forgive sin as well as heal 10. Matthew follows Jesus, gives reception in honor of Jesus (Mk. 2:13-17; Matt. 9:9-13; Lk. 5:27-32) 11. Jesus illustrates the newness of His message by parables of “bride-groom;” “old and new garment;” and old and new wineskins” (Mk. 2:18-22; Matt. 9:14-17; Lk. 5:33-39) 12. Jesus returns to Jerusalem for Passover (??) and heals lame man on the Sabbath. (John 5:1-47) 13. Controversy over Sabbath because disciples pluck grain in the fields; Jesus defends their actions with Old Testament examples (Mk. 2:23-28; Matt. 12:1-8; Lk. 6:1-5) 14. Controversy with Pharisees over healing of man with withered hand in synagogue on Sabbath (Mk. 3:1-6; Matt. 12:9-14; Lk. 6:6-11) 15. Jesus teaches and heals great crowds by the Sea of Galilee (Mk. 3:7-12; Matt. 12:15-21 [quotes Isaiah 42:1-4] 16. Jesus withdraws for a night of prayer on a mountain; afterward selects 12 Apostles (Mk. 3:13-19; Lk. 6:12-16)
